Things to do in Al Shahaniya
Al Shahaniya sits roughly 40 km west of Doha, a 30 to 40 minute drive, and its main draw is the camel racetrack, where robot jockeys strapped to the camels' backs are steered by owners driving alongside in SUVs.
Racing runs only in the cooler months, roughly October to April, on a schedule that changes week to week, so a morning drive out on a day without a race means an empty track and little else to see. Along the approach road, camel breeding farms line the verges, worth a slow pass even outside race days.
There is no public transport to Al Shahaniya; a rental car, taxi or organised tour is the only way in, and a normal saloon car is fine for the racetrack itself.
