Explore Doha and Qatar by area

Doha and its surroundings break down into four areas that suit different trip lengths and interests. The city itself centres on West Bay's skyline of towers, the Corniche promenade curving around the bay, Souq Waqif with its restored lanes of shops, spice stalls and falcon souq, and the Museum of Islamic Art on its own peninsula facing the National Museum of Qatar across the water. Katara Cultural Village sits between the two, mixing an amphitheatre, galleries and a public beach, while The Pearl offers a marina lined with cafes and boutiques.

Further out, Msheireb Downtown rebuilds the old city core around a heritage quarter, Lusail is the newer district north of the city with its own waterfront and stadium, and Al Rayyan, Education City and Aspire Zone group universities, sports venues and parkland to the west. South of the capital, the southern desert holds Sealine and the dunes near Mesaieed, along with the Inland Sea, known locally as Khor Al Adaid, a UNESCO-listed reserve where the desert meets the Gulf, and the fishing town of Al Wakrah with its restored waterfront souq.

North of Doha, Al Khor keeps a working dhow harbour and gives access to the Al Thakira mangroves, while Al Zubarah further north preserves a UNESCO World Heritage archaeological fort and town on the coast. West of the capital, Zekreet's limestone outcrops sit near Richard Serra's East-West/West-East sculpture and the Film City backdrop, and Al Shahaniya hosts camel racing on weekend mornings in season. Deciding how many of these areas to combine, and how much time to set aside for a desert excursion versus a day in the city, is the main planning decision for a Doha trip, and it depends more on interests and the season than on any fixed route.
